U.S. Reverses Trade Restrictions on Arrow Electronics’ China-Based Affiliates Amid National Security Concerns
U.S. Government Reverses Trade Restrictions on Arrow Electronics’ China Affiliates
Oct 18, 2023 – Centennial, Colorado
In a significant shift, the U.S. government announced on Saturday that it would reverse trade restrictions imposed on Arrow Electronics’ China-based affiliates. This decision comes after the Commerce Department had previously placed these entities on its Entity List for allegedly facilitating the sale of U.S. components found in weaponized drones used by Iran-backed groups, including the Houthis.
On October 8, Arrow Electronics Trading Co and another Arrow entity with six aliases in Hong Kong were added to the Entity List, which requires companies to obtain licenses to export goods and technology. Such licenses are often denied, reflecting U.S. national security and foreign policy concerns. The Commerce Department’s action was based on findings that drones operated by Iran-backed groups contained U.S. components traced back to sales linked to these Arrow-related entities.
However, Arrow Electronics received communication from the Commerce Department indicating that the restrictions would soon be lifted. “We have received official communication from the U.S. Commerce Department,” said Arrow spokesman John Hourigan. “Arrow is authorized to resume shipping to and from these entities under the same conditions that applied prior to October 8.”
The reversal is expected to be formally published in the U.S. Federal Register shortly. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensuring that export restrictions are effectively targeted to protect national security.
Hourigan reiterated that Arrow operates in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The company, which reported global sales of $28 billion in 2024, clarified that while Arrow Electronics Co. Ltd was initially described as a subsidiary, it is not actually affiliated with Arrow Electronics. However, the six aliases tied to the Hong Kong company will be removed from the Entity List.
As the situation unfolds, the implications of this decision could resonate across the electronics supply chain, particularly in the context of U.S.-China relations and national security concerns.
