This adorable toddler first captured the hearts of social media users back in April when his mother, Naya “J’chelle” Perry, shared a TikTok video showcasing his stunning, voluminous hair—reminiscent of the iconic Farrah Fawcett.
In the video, Perry recalls the moment Lucio entered the world, noting the astonished reactions from the medical staff. “The second he came out my belly, the first thing they said is ‘Oh my God, his hair!’” she exclaimed, as viewers were treated to a snapshot of three-hour-old Lucio sporting a full head of shiny, black-brown locks. Perry humorously dubbed this his “placenta perm.”
As Lucio grew, so did his mane. By the time he reached three months, he had developed a halo of curls, and now, at 18 months, he resembles Maui from Disney’s Moana.
Unsurprisingly, Lucio’s luscious locks have sparked a mix of admiration and playful jealousy online. One commenter quipped, “Baby got an entire roller set and I’m sitting here bald. The term “placenta perm” refers to the curly or wavy hair pattern that some babies are born with, thanks to lanugo—a fine, soft hair that covers the developing fetus during the second trimester to help regulate temperature. While lanugo typically falls off in the last weeks of pregnancy, some babies, like Lucio, retain their fluffy locks. Experts believe genetics, prenatal development, and hormone levels play significant roles in this phenomenon.
In an interview with Newsweek, Perry shared that while Lucio’s hair didn’t show up on any ultrasounds, she experienced other “old wives’ tale” signs, including an itchy stomach and acid reflux. “I know that heartburn was killing you,” one commenter joked.
Grandma’s Styling Skills
Lucio’s unique hair texture—super curly in the front and straighter in the back—makes styling a bit of a challenge. Fortunately, Grandma is the designated hairstylist. “My mom is the master braider for him,” Perry said. “He will get fussy if I try to touch his hair, but will sit just perfectly for grandma!”
