Celebrating 15 Years of Recovery: Back2Basics Expands Its Impact on Young Men’s Lives Through Innovative Treatment and Outdoor Adventures
Back2Basics Celebrates 15 Years of Transformative Recovery in Flagstaff
Flagstaff, AZ — Back2Basics, a pioneering substance abuse treatment center, is marking its 15th anniversary with a renewed commitment to helping young men recover from addiction through innovative outdoor adventures and personalized care. Founded by Roy DuPrez in 2010, the center has evolved significantly, recently unveiling a new licensed residential facility that promises to enhance its therapeutic offerings.
Located near the picturesque Rio de Flag and the Flagstaff Urban Trails System, the new facility boasts seven bedrooms and bathrooms on 1.2 acres, providing ample communal space for clients. “We’ve been up and running for about a month,” DuPrez shared. “This is a unique opportunity. It is the centerpiece of our program right now because of the layout and the aesthetics.”
Back2Basics has served approximately 500 men, combining hands-on therapy with both traditional and innovative counseling methods. The program emphasizes life skills development and an extensive outdoor adventure recovery initiative. Clients frequently explore Arizona’s stunning landscapes, from the San Francisco Peaks to the Grand Canyon, engaging in activities like hiking, kayaking, and skiing.
“The benefits of vigorous activity in outdoor settings are immense,” DuPrez explained. “It helps build self-awareness, fosters community service, and strengthens the mind-body-spirit connection.” He believes that engaging young adults in active pursuits is crucial for breaking the cycle of addiction. “There needs to be some sort of carrot, not just another relapse prevention lecture,” he added.
In addition to its core program, Back2Basics offers a secondary initiative called Beyond the Basics, which aids clients in transitioning from rehabilitation to long-term sobriety. This comprehensive approach has attracted clients from across the nation, especially since the center now accepts most commercial and private insurance plans.
DuPrez, who moved to Flagstaff in 1993 to attend Northern Arizona University, has dedicated his career to recovery and mental health. Under his leadership, Back2Basics has formed partnerships with various nonprofit organizations, raising $200,000 in scholarships over the past two years to support clients in need.
“I feel so fortunate that we are still relevant and able to work in this capacity,” DuPrez said. The program’s intimate setting allows for individualized care, and many alumni have returned to help others on their recovery journeys, with some even becoming therapists themselves.
As Back2Basics celebrates this significant milestone, DuPrez reflects on the impact of the program. “We’ve evolved and helped more families. I sleep well at night because we have effective outcomes,” he concluded.
With its innovative approach and commitment to community, Back2Basics continues to be a beacon of hope for those seeking recovery in Flagstaff and beyond.
