A Day of Healing and Glamour: Celebrating Survivors at Tabula Rasa Studio
Bakersfield Studio Hosts Glamorous Day of Healing for Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer Survivors
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — Laughter echoed through Tabula Rasa Studio in Bakersfield as the gentle hum of hair dryers mingled with the sweet scent of hairspray and fresh makeup. But this was no ordinary day at the wellness studio; it was a heartfelt celebration of resilience and transformation for survivors of domestic violence and breast cancer.
Owner Malaina Parra, a survivor herself, orchestrated a day filled with pampering, gourmet meals, and the full “glam experience”—complete with hair and makeup services. “We’re honoring them with everything they deserve,” Parra said, her voice brimming with pride and purpose.
The event, held in recognition of both Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, transformed the studio into a sanctuary where survivors could relax, reflect, and reconnect with their inner strength and beauty.
For Parra, this initiative is deeply personal. “People say I beat the odds,” she shared. “I’m a single mom, a Hispanic woman—but I educated myself, gave back, and found strength in others. That’s how I renewed my soul. There is hope.”
Among the honored guests was Shelly Castaneda, who faced her own battle with breast cancer after being diagnosed in 2012 at the age of 45. “Cancer runs in my family, so I was very proactive with early detection,” she explained. “I didn’t have any symptoms; it was found during my yearly mammogram and ultrasounds.”
Castaneda reflected on how her diagnosis transformed her self-image. “You think the things that make you a woman—your hair, your health, your body—are taken from you,” she said. “But it humbles you. That’s the hidden blessing.”
After experiencing a relapse in 2015, Castaneda chose to share her story, using her experience to uplift others. “As women, especially going through cancer, we’re used to being the caretakers,” she noted. “But I learned it’s okay to let others care for you. To rest. To receive.”
The event served as a poignant reminder that healing extends beyond the physical; it encompasses emotional and spiritual well-being, often ignited by the power of community.
Tabula Rasa Studio is now expanding its mission, continuing to provide a space for renewal, resilience, and rediscovery for those who have triumphed over life’s toughest challenges.
As the day came to a close, the atmosphere was charged with hope and camaraderie, leaving participants with a renewed sense of strength and beauty.
