Brazil recalls ambassador from Israel in response to Gaza attacks

Brazilian President Withdraws Ambassador to Israel Amid Tensions

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has taken a bold step in response to the ongoing tensions between Brazil and Israel over the conflict in Gaza. Lula has withdrawn the country’s ambassador to Israel, Ambassador Frederico Meyer, and transferred him to Geneva to join Brazil’s permanent mission to the United Nations and other international organizations.

The move comes after months of criticism from Lula towards Israel’s offensive in Gaza, which he has compared to the Holocaust. This comparison led to a public reprimand from Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, who summoned the Brazilian ambassador to the national Holocaust museum in West Jerusalem.

Lula, a prominent voice for the Global South and the current president of the G20, has faced backlash at home from the far right over his comments on the Holocaust. However, he has received support from other leaders in Latin America, including Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who has also severed ties with Israel.

Both Brazil and Colombia have supported South Africa’s complaint against Israel before the International Court of Justice, alleging that the Gaza assault violates the Genocide Convention. The conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 36,000 Palestinians and more than 81,000 wounded, while the death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attacks is at least 1,139.

As the assault in Gaza continues, Israel is facing increasing global scrutiny for its actions, particularly in the city of Rafah, the last city to see a ground offensive. The United Nations has warned of the dire humanitarian situation in the area, with up to 1.4 million people sheltering in the city before the offensive began.

The conflict has also reignited calls for a Palestinian state, with Norway, Spain, and Ireland recently recognizing the State of Palestine. This move breaks with the long-held position of Western powers that a Palestinian state can only be declared as part of a negotiated peace with Israel.

The withdrawal of Brazil’s ambassador to Israel is a significant development in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, highlighting the growing international pressure on Israel to end its offensive and address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
