To minimize damage, experts recommend using a wide-tooth comb. This gentler option reduces tension and helps prevent breakage. Start combing from the ends and work your way up, avoiding any harsh yanking from the roots. Flexible detangling brushes are also effective, as they can glide through hair without causing excessive tension.

The Risks of Heat Tools

If you’re tempted to reach for your blow dryer or curling iron immediately after showering, think again. Applying heat to soaking wet hair can cause the water inside the hair shafts to boil, leading to ruptured cuticles and increased hair fall. Dr. Vara warns, “The speed at which water is removed from the hair shaft can cause a rupturing effect which pushes out the cuticle.”

Instead, gently dry your hair with a towel to absorb excess moisture before using any heat tools. Allowing your hair to air dry for a bit can also minimize heat exposure, resulting in less frizz and breakage.
