Bolivia’s Opposition Leader Luis Fernando Camacho Transferred to House Arrest Amid Political Turmoil

La Paz, Bolivia — In a significant legal development, a Bolivian court has ordered the transfer of high-profile opposition leader Luis Fernando Camacho to house arrest, following widespread criticism over the length of his pretrial detention. The ruling, issued on Wednesday, allows Camacho, the right-wing governor of Santa Cruz, to return home under strict conditions, including submitting to house arrest.

Camacho, who has been in pretrial detention since December 2022, is expected to travel back to Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s most populous city, on Friday. His lawyer, Martin Camacho, confirmed the court’s decision, stating that the governor would be able to resume his political duties under the terms of his bail.

“This is the first step towards freedom,” Camacho declared after the ruling. “The elected representatives of justice today begin to restore the rule of law.”

A Political Shift in Bolivia

Camacho’s release comes at a pivotal moment in Bolivian politics. The left-wing Movement for Socialism (MAS) party, which has dominated the political landscape for the past two decades, faces a potential upheaval. In the recent general election held on August 17, all left-wing presidential candidates were eliminated, paving the way for a runoff between centrist Senator Rodrigo Paz and former President Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga, who has promised radical changes.

Camacho, often referred to as the “Bolivian Bolsonaro” by the Argentinian newspaper La Nacion, has emerged as a prominent figure in Bolivia’s far-right Christian coalition, Creemos. His political journey has been marked by controversy, particularly during the 2019 political crisis that led to the ousting of then-President Evo Morales.

The Case Against Camacho

Despite his transfer to house arrest, Camacho still faces serious legal challenges. He is charged with “terrorism” related to his actions during the 2019 unrest, which Morales described as a coup. Camacho’s role in the protests, which resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people, has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters.

Additionally, he faces charges stemming from the 2022 unrest in Santa Cruz, where protests erupted over the delayed census, leading to violent clashes and accusations of human rights abuses. Prosecutors allege that Camacho played a significant role in inciting the turmoil.

Split Opinions Over Camacho’s Release

The Supreme Court of Justice has called for a review of Camacho’s case, as well as those of other opposition leaders, including former President Jeanine Añez. Quiroga, campaigning for the presidency, has publicly supported the release of imprisoned opposition figures, emphasizing the need for justice in a democratic Bolivia.

While supporters in Santa Cruz celebrated Camacho’s anticipated return, protests erupted outside the court in La Paz, where some demanded his continued incarceration. “Without justice, there is no democracy,” they chanted, reflecting the deep divisions within Bolivian society.
