Kansas Tourism Shines Bright with Gold Award for Sunflower Summer Program
TOPEKA – In a remarkable achievement for the Sunflower State, Kansas Tourism has been awarded the prestigious Gold Award in the State Bridging Communities category for its innovative Sunflower Summer program. The announcement was made during the 2025 Educational Seminar for Tourism Organization (ESTO) Conference, where the U.S. Travel Association recognized standout initiatives that enhance community engagement and inspire travel.
Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland expressed pride in the program, stating, “The Sunflower Summer program has been a shining example of how Kansas is investing in families, education, and community connections. By opening the doors to cultural, historical, and recreational experiences, we’re not only building memories — we’re strengthening our local economies by driving more visitation to the many unique attractions that Kansas has to offer.”
The Bridging Communities category celebrates campaigns that create meaningful connections across diverse populations and regions, showcasing bold ideas and data-driven creativity that have a significant community impact.
Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe emphasized the program’s importance, saying, “This award underscores our goal to grow the tourism industry by connecting Kansas families with our state’s cultural and educational treasures found in their own backyard. Sunflower Summer sparks new journeys, fosters state pride, and fuels the entire tourism economy.”
The 2024 Sunflower Summer program proved to be a resounding success, with over 705,000 Kansas residents visiting 223 participating attractions. This recognition builds on previous accolades, including the Best Local Impact Campaign at the 2025 Etsy Awards, further solidifying the program’s role in promoting local tourism.
As Kansas continues to shine on the national stage, the Sunflower Summer program stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in enhancing the state’s tourism landscape.
