Democratic Lawmakers Criticize Dismissal of CDC Director

Calls for Accountability: Lawmakers Demand Ouster of HHS Secretary Following CDC Shake-Up

Title: Turmoil at the CDC: Calls for HHS Secretary’s Ouster Following Director’s Firing

WASHINGTON — In a dramatic turn of events for the nation’s public health landscape, prominent Democratic lawmakers are demanding the removal of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. just one day after the abrupt firing of CDC Director Susan Monarez.

Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) took to social media late Wednesday, urging the White House to take action. “If there are any adults left in the White House: we cannot let RFK Jr. burn what’s left of CDC,” she declared, adding a stark call to “FIRE HIM.” Murray, a key member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, expressed deep concern over the future of the CDC under Kennedy’s leadership.

The controversy erupted after the Department of Health and Human Services announced Monarez’s departure on social media, a move that her lawyers quickly contested, stating she had neither resigned nor been informed of her firing. Monarez had been in her role for less than a month when her dismissal triggered a wave of resignations from four other top CDC officials, including Dr. Dan Jernigan and Dr. Deb Houry.

Murray characterized Kennedy as “a dangerous man” whose actions could jeopardize public health by promoting conspiracy theories and disinformation. Senator Andy Kim (D-N.J.) echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the critical importance of safeguarding Americans’ health. “We are talking about Americans’ health and safety. Nothing is more important,” he wrote.

The fallout from Monarez’s firing has raised alarms among public health advocates. Her attorneys claimed that she was targeted for refusing to endorse “unscientific, reckless directives” that compromised public safety. Following the firing, the White House confirmed that Monarez was terminated for not aligning with the President’s agenda of “Making America Healthy Again.”

This upheaval comes at a time when the FDA has approved updated COVID-19 vaccines, albeit with restrictions on who can receive them. Kennedy’s tenure has been marked by significant staff cuts and the dismantling of advisory panels that previously supported mRNA vaccines, raising concerns among public health experts.

A letter signed by over 750 former and current HHS employees criticized Kennedy’s “dangerous and deceitful statements,” linking them to a recent tragic incident involving a police officer outside the CDC in Atlanta, who was killed by a shooter expressing distrust in the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee is poised to investigate the recent shake-up at the CDC, with both Chairman Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Ranking Member Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) calling for oversight hearings. Cassidy, who had reservations about Kennedy before his confirmation, stated that these high-profile departures warrant scrutiny.

In stark contrast, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a vocal critic of the pandemic response, welcomed the resignations, labeling the departing officials as “extremists” and questioning the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines for healthy children.

As the political fallout continues, the future of the CDC and public health policy hangs in the balance, with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle grappling with the implications of these unprecedented changes.
