Sum 41 Announces Double Album “Heaven X Hell” and Plans to Disband in 2024
Sum 41 fans were hit with a mix of emotions this week as the band announced the release of their new double album, “Heaven X Hell,” along with the heartbreaking news that they will be calling it quits in 2024. The album, which features a blend of punk and heavy metal, has been highly anticipated by fans of all eras of Sum 41.
In a recent interview with Canada’s CJAY 92, frontman Deryck Whibley opened up about the band’s decision to end things and why “Heaven X Hell” is the perfect record to go out on. Whibley explained that after years of dedicating his full focus to Sum 41, he felt it was time to explore other avenues and put his energy into something new.
“I’ve been in this band since I was in tenth grade, and I just… I’m getting to a point where I’m thinking, I’d like to put some focus and energy into something else,” Whibley shared. “And I felt this is probably the best record we’ve ever made. And I think this version of the band is the best we’ve ever been live. And I thought, what a way to just go out on this one.”
Surprisingly, Whibley revealed that “Heaven X Hell” was not initially intended to be Sum 41’s final album. He explained that he had started writing songs for other artists during the pandemic, but ended up keeping them for himself as he fell in love with the material.
“I didn’t even know we were making a double album. I didn’t even know it was going to be what it became. It wasn’t until all the music was just written. I was just writing for the sake of writing, and when I listened to it all back, it just kind of spoke to me,” Whibley said.
As fans prepare to say goodbye to Sum 41 in 2024, they can take solace in the fact that the band is going out on a high note with “Heaven X Hell.” The album promises to be a fitting farewell for a band that has left an indelible mark on the punk and heavy metal scene.
