Update on Venue Plans for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics: No New Permanent Venues to be Built
The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles are shaping up to be a historic event with some exciting updates on the venues that will be part of the Summer Games. Organizers from LA28 shared a proposal that includes event re-assignments and plans to move some competitions outside the city of Los Angeles.
One of the key highlights of the updated plan is the decision not to build any new permanent venues in Los Angeles, opting instead to utilize existing world-class stadiums and arenas. This move is expected to save over $150 million and generate new revenue to help maintain a balanced budget for the Games.
Some of the notable venue assignments include gymnastics at Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA, swimming at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, and basketball at the Intuit Dome, currently under construction in Inglewood. Track and field events will remain at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which has a rich history of hosting Olympic events.
Other venues in the plan include the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area for BMX, skateboarding, and archery, and the USC campus pool for diving. Additionally, some events like canoe slalom and softball will be moved to Oklahoma City due to the lack of suitable venues in Southern California.
The updated plan also includes proposals to move certain events outside the city of Los Angeles, pending city approval. These include swimming, artistic swimming, basketball, and equestrian events. On the other hand, events like diving, archery, and gymnastics will be hosted within the city limits.
With these exciting updates, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are set to provide an unparalleled experience for athletes and fans alike. The Games are scheduled for July 14-30, 2028, and will mark the third time that Los Angeles has hosted the Summer Olympics, following successful editions in 1932 and 1984.
