Navigating the Grant Process for Wigs: Insights from Joy Kennedy of Aura Hair

This week, Joy Kennedy, a passionate advocate for wig wearers and owner of Aura Hair, sheds light on the often-overlooked grant process for wigs, emphasizing the importance of informed choices in hairpiece selection.

In a recent discussion, Kennedy, who describes herself as a “hair nerd,” highlighted the necessity for clients to be well-informed before their appointments. “Many clients arrive without the essential information they need to make the best choice for themselves,” she explained. “Whether it’s synthetic, high heat fiber, or human hair, understanding the options is crucial.”

Kennedy is particularly vocal about the need for the government to reconsider the VAT charged on hairpieces, which she argues are often medical necessities. “Wigs can be life-changing for those experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions,” she stated.

Understanding the Grant Process

The Department of Social Protection offers a grant of €500 towards the cost of a hairpiece. This process begins when a wig provider, with the client’s authorization, checks eligibility on the Welfare Partners website. Following this, a specific form must be completed by the client’s doctor.

Once the necessary documentation is submitted, the wig provider personalizes the hairpiece and educates the client on its care. The grant is then processed, with the provider receiving payment after a few weeks. Any costs exceeding the €500 grant are the responsibility of the client.

In addition to this, the Health Service Executive (HSE) provides grants for clients with alopecia and those undergoing chemotherapy. Alopecia clients can receive €500, while chemotherapy clients are eligible for €770. The HSE has implemented a new system for processing these grants, which is still in its early stages but remains valid.

Additional Support for Clients

For clients in receipt of a medical card, the HSE grant of €500 is available, while the €770 grant for chemotherapy patients is accessible to anyone undergoing cancer treatment, regardless of medical card status. The new system also includes provisions for mastectomy bras and swimwear.

Wig providers play a crucial role in this process, submitting quotations and invoices to the HSE, along with necessary documentation from a GP or consultant. Clients are reminded that any costs above the grant amounts will need to be covered out of pocket.

Caring for Your Wig

Kennedy emphasizes the importance of proper care for wigs, noting that each type requires a specific hair care routine. “I’ve heard horror stories of clients being advised to use baby shampoo or even Lux!” she remarked. At Aura Hair, clients receive a comprehensive home care kit, including a mannequin head to help maintain the shape and quality of their wig when not in use.

For those seeking more information on the grant process or wig care, Kennedy encourages reaching out to Aura Hair Specialists at 044 966 1234 or visiting their website at www.aurahairspecialists.ie.

As the conversation around hairpieces continues to evolve, Kennedy’s insights serve as a vital resource for anyone navigating the complexities of wig selection and funding.
