The key is to identify your scalp type—what may be oily in summer could turn dry in winter.

For those with oilier scalps, Dr. Sethi recommends washing hair two to three times a week with a shampoo containing salicylic acid. Conversely, if your scalp is drier, limit washes to once a week and opt for hydrating shampoos with ingredients like urea. “Conditioning before shampooing can also be beneficial,” she adds.

Product Adjustments

While it’s not necessary to overhaul your entire hair care regimen with the change of seasons, Dr. Sethi advises being mindful of how your scalp reacts. “If your scalp is oilier in summer, lighter products are best. In winter, heavier products can be used, but be cautious as they can lead to acne and dandruff.”

Look for miracle ingredients like behentrimonium chloride, which helps reduce frizz, and steer clear of products with excessive surfactants that can dry out your hair.

Nourishment from Within

Rashi Chahal, a nutritionist at La Femme, highlights the critical connection between diet and hair health. “During winter, lower humidity means slower sebum production, leading to dryness and flakiness,” she notes. To combat this, she recommends incorporating Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet through sources like flax seeds, walnuts, and chia seeds.

To manage frizz, ensure your diet is rich in protein, folic acid, and B-vitamins. Foods like moong dal, lentils, and millets can help, but don’t forget to increase your water intake as well.

A Balanced Approach

Winter can present a perplexing challenge: frizzy hair paired with a greasy scalp. To balance sebum production, Chahal suggests loading up on antioxidants, particularly Vitamin A and zinc, found in foods like pumpkin and sweet potatoes.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for hair care, certain superfoods can work wonders. Amla, rich in Vitamin C, boosts collagen production; flaxseeds fight inflammation; and fermented foods enhance nutrient absorption. Sweet potatoes, carrots, and green vegetables also promote hair growth thanks to their magnesium content.
