Immediate Financial Relief for Businesses Affected by Algal Bloom: $28 Million Support Package Announced

Immediate Financial Relief for Businesses Affected by Algal Bloom

Semaphore, SA – In a swift response to the recent algal bloom crisis, the South Australian Government, in collaboration with the Federal Albanese Labor Government, has initiated a $28 million support package aimed at providing immediate financial relief to impacted businesses.

The assistance grants, which are reportedly more generous than those offered during the COVID-19 pandemic, are being disbursed within a remarkable 15 business days, ensuring that help reaches those in need without delay.

One of the first beneficiaries of this support is Wildwater Jetski Tours, based in North Haven, which has received a $10,000 Small Business Support Grant. This grant is part of a broader initiative designed to assist businesses that have experienced a significant downturn in revenue due to the algal bloom.

Comprehensive Support for Affected Industries

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Assistance Grant is another critical component of the package, offering up to $100,000 for fisheries and aquaculture license holders who have faced closures or reduced catches due to the presence of harmful brevetoxins. Currently, four businesses are under assessment, with one already approved for a $50,000 payment.

In addition to direct financial support, the government is also providing relief from fishing license fees to 35 operators across various sectors, including charter boats and marine scalefish.

To qualify for the $10,000 Small Business Support Grants, businesses must demonstrate a 30% decline in turnover. Eligible sectors include marine tourism operators, fishing charters, seafood processors, and beachfront cafés, among others.

Holistic Approach to Recovery

Recognizing the broader impact of the algal bloom, the State Government is also offering financial counseling, mental health support, and workforce advice to help small businesses navigate recovery and continuity plans.

Peter Malinauskas, Premier of South Australia, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “When we announced business support grants just under a fortnight ago, we made clear we’d do everything in our power to see this support flowing quickly. I’m pleased to report that $10,000 grants are now beginning to hit the bank accounts of businesses impacted by this algal bloom.”

Investing in Future Resilience

The support package also includes investments in a Coastal Monitoring Network to enhance early detection of harmful algal blooms, the establishment of a new national testing laboratory in South Australia, and funding for beach clean-ups to address the environmental fallout.

Susan Close, Minister for Environment and Water, highlighted the importance of supporting businesses reliant on a healthy marine environment. “We are firmly committed to supporting small businesses affected by the bloom as well as investing in the science and research we need to build resilience to these types of events,” she said.

Community Engagement and Future Planning

As part of the ongoing response, the State Government is hosting community forums to keep affected residents informed and engaged. A dedicated website and hotline have also been established to provide timely information and updates.

As South Australians rally together to support their coastal communities, the government’s proactive measures aim not only to provide immediate relief but also to foster long-term resilience against future environmental challenges.
