Free Haircut Fridays Offer Layers, Bangs, and Big Chops to the UNC Community

Transforming Community Through Free Haircut Fridays: A Collaborative Experience in Grooming and Learning

Free Haircut Fridays: A Cut Above the Rest at UNC

Chapel Hill, NC — Every Friday, the Undergraduate Library at the University of North Carolina transforms into a buzzing salon, where students gather not just for a trim but for a unique blend of community, creativity, and learning. This initiative, aptly named Free Haircut Fridays, has quickly become a beloved tradition among students, thanks in part to the generous support of local entrepreneur Joshua Esnard, owner of The Cut Buddy.

Esnard, whose company specializes in at-home grooming tools, recently donated a variety of supplies—including razors, scissors, and hair products—to enhance the Free Haircut Friday experience. “These quality donations help make our services accessible for everyone,” said club founder, Oringel.

For many student stylists, these Fridays are more than just a chance to practice their skills; they are an opportunity to connect with peers and learn from one another. Sucheta Sundaram, a junior who has been cutting her own hair for five years, expressed her excitement about the collaborative atmosphere. “I’m learning now, and I’m teaching Daniel how to do female haircuts. It’s all just a very collaborative experience,” she said.

Sundaram, who primarily focuses on women’s haircuts, is encouraged by Oringel to expand her skill set to include men’s styles. “It’s about learning and giving back to the community while we’re learning,” she added, highlighting the initiative’s dual purpose.

The creative energy at Free Haircut Fridays is palpable. Students like Sundaram utilize techniques learned from YouTube and their peers to bring fresh styles—layers, bangs, and bold chops—to the UNC community. The event not only fosters skill development but also inspires students to step out of their comfort zones.

Lucy Soucek, a first-year student, was the first to receive a haircut during the inaugural event on August 22. “Not only did I leave with a trim, but I also felt inspired to try something new,” she shared. Soucek plans to join the team and explore various techniques alongside fellow club members, eager to dive deeper into the world of hairstyling.

Oringel hopes that Free Haircut Fridays will continue to grow, attracting more students each week. What began as a small gathering has evolved into a lively event, with curious onlookers often stopping by to witness the hair transformations. “It’s so cool to give that piece of kindness to strangers,” Soucek remarked, encapsulating the spirit of the initiative.

As the buzz of clippers and laughter fills the air, Free Haircut Fridays stands as a testament to the power of community, creativity, and the simple joy of a fresh haircut. Whether you’re a seasoned stylist or a first-time client, there’s a place for everyone at this weekly celebration of hair and friendship.
