Glen Powell Shares Why He Left Hollywood for a More Grounded Life in Texas
Glen Powell Ditches Hollywood Glitz for a Peaceful Life in Texas
In a bold move that defies the typical Hollywood narrative, actor Glen Powell has traded the bright lights of Los Angeles for the serene landscapes of his hometown, Austin, Texas. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair for its 2026 Hollywood Issue, the 37-year-old star of the upcoming film Twisters opened up about his decision to leave the bustling film industry behind.
“I needed a spiritual place where I could hang my hat and truly be unplugged,” Powell shared, emphasizing the mental toll that the constant buzz of LA can take on an individual. “If you live in LA … where everyone is sort of a part of this thing, you can’t ever sign off of that app.”
Despite his departure from Hollywood, Powell remains optimistic about the burgeoning film scene in Texas, noting, “There’s so much being shot around Texas now. It’s about to get even more competitive.” His return to Austin has not only provided him with a sense of peace but has also allowed him to reconnect with his roots.
A New Chapter in Education
In a surprising twist, Powell has enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, recently paying his tuition for the upcoming semester. “I literally just paid my tuition two days ago for next semester,” he said, acknowledging the unpredictability of a career in acting. “Anyone who believes that they’re going to be top dog forever has not studied how Hollywood works.”
His decision to return to school reflects a desire to grow both personally and professionally. “The best that you can do is really work as hard as you possibly can. Make things that you believe in, treat people well, and hope that you leave the world with some classic things that they can continue watching for years to come,” he added.
Family First
Powell’s move back to Texas was also motivated by family ties. “My parents just turned 70, and you want to enjoy every moment you have near your family,” he explained in a previous interview with USA Today. This sentiment resonates deeply with many who prioritize family connections over the allure of fame.
Reflecting on Hollywood
Looking back on his journey, Powell acknowledges the challenges he faced as a “struggling actor” in Hollywood. “Even at the darkest moments in that town, when I really didn’t have anything happening, you sort of have to lie to yourself, at least a little bit, and act like this is that chapter of the story where things just aren’t going right,” he reflected.
His big break came in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick, followed by a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Hit Man. Now, he stars in The Running Man, alongside notable actors like Coleman Domingo and Josh Brolin.
A Balanced Perspective
Powell’s journey serves as a reminder that success in Hollywood doesn’t always equate to happiness. “It’s really fun to be around people that love movies and love the business. However, sometimes that echo chamber can be not so great for you on the mental health level,” he noted. By stepping away from the industry, he hopes to find a healthier balance in his life.
As he embarks on this new chapter in Texas, Powell’s story resonates with many who seek fulfillment beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. His journey is a testament to the importance of personal well-being, family, and the pursuit of genuine happiness.
