Governor Walz and DFL Leaders Take Action Against Gun Violence: A Statewide Dialogue with Minnesotans
Governor Walz and DFL Leaders Hit the Road to Address Gun Violence in Minnesota
Waconia, MN — In a bold move to engage with Minnesotans on the pressing issue of gun violence, Governor Tim Walz and DFL leaders kicked off a statewide tour this weekend, starting in Waconia. The initiative comes amid stalled negotiations in St. Paul, where legislative leaders remain at an impasse over gun control measures.
The high school auditorium in Waconia was packed with hundreds of attendees eager to hear from Governor Walz and Gabby Giffords, a gun violence survivor and former congresswoman. The event featured emotional testimonies, including a poignant speech from Tess Rada, a parent of a third grader at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. Rada recounted the harrowing day of the August 27th shooting that left 30 injured and two children dead, urging the crowd to consider the human cost of gun violence.
“If your child was one of the lucky ones who survived, imagine finding them that day shaking, crying, covered in blood,” Rada said, her voice trembling with emotion. She emphasized the need for change, stating, “I understand that guns are a part of American life… but the cost of these particular weapons is simply too high.”
Governor Walz, who has previously advocated for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, acknowledged the challenges ahead. With progress on gun control measures stalling, he proposed a new approach: a constitutional amendment that would allow voters to decide on the issue. “Put it on the ballot and you can vote for a constitutional amendment on this,” Walz declared, rallying the crowd’s support.
However, the path to a constitutional amendment is fraught with obstacles. Any proposal must pass through a divided legislature before reaching the ballot. “It is important that we look at every option available to us,” said Sen. Erin Murphy, DFL Senate majority leader, emphasizing the need for legislative cooperation.
The response from Republican leaders was swift. House Speaker Lisa Demuth criticized the governor’s approach, suggesting that some Democrats are not fully committed to the gun control efforts. “Since the governor couldn’t even get his own members on board with a special session on banning guns, it appears he’s moved on to holding campaign rallies hosted by the DFL that aren’t truly open to the public,” Demuth stated.
The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus also weighed in, labeling the event as “political theater” and asserting that Walz’s agenda is “too extreme for even his own party.”
Despite the pushback, the DFL plans to continue its tour, with the next event scheduled for Rochester on November 6th. As the debate over gun violence continues, the stakes remain high for both sides of the aisle, with the voices of Minnesotans at the forefront of this critical conversation.
