Sustainable Beauty Takes Center Stage: Mild Surfactants Revolutionize Hair Care at SEPAWA Congress 2025

Berlin, Germany — The beauty industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards sustainability, with mild and environmentally friendly surfactants emerging as key players in hair care innovations. At the SEPAWA Congress 2025 held last week in Berlin, industry leaders gathered to discuss the latest trends, with ecological surfactants taking the spotlight.

Dr. Petra Kudla, global marketing manager for hair care at Clariant, emphasized the interconnectedness of skin and hair care, stating, “Everything in skin care swaps into hair care.” This holistic approach is gaining traction as consumers seek products that address multiple needs, leading to the rise of concepts like hair cycling, which mirrors skin cycling.

The Microbiome Revolution

A significant focus at the congress was the health of the scalp microbiome. Innospec showcased its microbiome-friendly surfactants, with business manager Jackie Searle highlighting the company’s commitment to creating diverse foam structures for various products, including shampoos and even pet care. “We have a surfactant blend that is ultra mild and certified as microbiome-friendly for the scalp,” Searle explained.

Research indicates that harsh surfactants can strip essential oils from the skin, impairing the skin barrier and negatively impacting the microbiome. Nadine Krug, senior application technologist at Symrise, echoed this sentiment, noting that consumers are increasingly prioritizing scalp care and holistic beauty solutions.

A Green Revolution in Hair Care

Looking ahead, Krug predicts a “green conditioner revolution,” where synthetic ingredients are replaced with natural, high-performing alternatives. “We are showing how nature and science can create meaningful innovation,” she said, underscoring Symrise’s commitment to delivering ethical and sustainable solutions.

Syensqo also presented its biodegradable surfactants, including the Geropon ingredient, which is designed for sensitive skin. François-Florian Bruckner, the company’s business development manager, emphasized the importance of creating products that are not only effective but also environmentally friendly. “We have to be good for the hair, scalp, and skin, but also for the planet,” he stated.

Reducing Environmental Footprints

As sustainability becomes a priority for cosmetic ingredient manufacturers, companies like Innospec are innovating to reduce their environmental impact. By minimizing water content in their products, they are lowering shipping weights and plastic packaging needs. Searle highlighted the development of solid bars and dilutable concentrates as part of this initiative.

Lignopure, another exhibitor, is making strides in sustainability by upcycling lignin from the paper industry, turning what was once considered waste into valuable cosmetic applications. Yuan Gao, product innovation scientist at Lignopure, noted, “We give it a second life to reduce the environmental footprint.”

Brenntag’s director of industry management for beauty and personal care, Stefano Rossiello, reinforced the idea that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand. “We believe we are in a position to offer our customers the chance to produce and innovate with products that reduce their environmental footprint,” he said.

Conclusion

As the beauty industry continues to evolve, the emphasis on sustainable practices and mild surfactants is reshaping hair care. With a growing awareness of the importance of scalp health and the microbiome, brands are poised to meet consumer demands for effective, eco-friendly products. The discussions at SEPAWA Congress 2025 signal a promising future for sustainable beauty, where innovation and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
