The Future of Hairstyling: Mentorship, Mastery, and Business Savvy with Elgin Charles and Industry Leaders
Elgin Charles Launches ‘Hair Camp’ to Empower Next Generation of Stylists
Beverly Hills, CA — Elgin Charles, renowned as the “King of Hair,” is set to revolutionize the hairstyling industry with his upcoming reality competition series, Hair Camp, premiering next year on the Black-owned streaming platform Blacktivity. With over four decades of experience and a clientele that includes icons like Gabrielle Union and Serena Williams, Charles aims to mentor aspiring stylists while addressing the pressing challenges faced by young Black professionals in the beauty industry.
In Hair Camp, contestants will compete for a $25,000 grant and the opportunity to license one of Charles’s salons. The show promises to blend technical hairstyling challenges with essential business acumen, emphasizing that success in the industry requires more than just artistic talent.
“You can be a jack of all trades, but you have to master one,” Charles asserts. “And you need the business skills — the LLC, the trademark, the customer service — to match. Longevity in this industry is about more than hair. It’s about people, professionalism, and persistence.”
Charles’s initiative comes at a crucial time, as social media has amplified customer frustrations over poor service experiences, including last-minute cancellations and inconsistent quality. His focus on foundational skills is echoed by fellow entrepreneur Dezi Santiago, who transitioned from stylist to business owner after identifying gaps in service standards.
Santiago, founder of Biomni Hair Care, launched her brand in 2010 with a client-first philosophy that prioritizes streamlined scheduling and comprehensive service. Her line of non-toxic hair products, designed for diverse textures, has garnered a loyal following.
“This is not a hustle — it’s corporate,” Santiago emphasizes. “Your clients are paying for your lifestyle. Respect their time, respect their hair, and set up your business right from the start.”
Meanwhile, Tamara Taylor, founder of Mastermind Mgmt, approaches the industry’s challenges from a management perspective. Her nonprofit initiative, Mastermind Matters, offers workshops on essential business practices, helping creatives navigate the complexities of entity formation, tax compliance, and contract negotiation.
“People talk about making money, but not about maintaining it,” Taylor notes. “I’ve seen multi-six-figure earners unable to work high-profile jobs because their paperwork wasn’t in order. My goal is to make sure artists are set up for the opportunities they deserve.”
Together, these leaders are united in their mission to instill a culture of excellence among the next generation of Millennial and Gen Z stylists. As Charles puts it, “It’s time to pass it on.”
With Hair Camp, Charles not only aims to elevate the craft of hairstyling but also to ensure that the future of the industry is bright, professional, and rooted in strong business practices. The show promises to be a transformative platform for aspiring stylists, setting the stage for a new era in beauty.
