Celebrity hair stylist Simone Kogen, known for her work with stars like Jonathan Bailey and Nicholas Hoult, emphasizes that the frequency of hair washing is largely dictated by hair type.

The Science of Sebum

Dr. Wang, a leading dermatologist, advises that individuals with fine hair should aim to wash their hair five to six times a week. In contrast, those blessed with thicker hair can get away with washing just two to three times weekly. “With less frequent washing, sebum—the natural oil produced by our scalp—accumulates and changes composition when exposed to air,” Dr. Wang explains. This oxidation can lead to skin irritation, inflammation, and even microbial overgrowth.

Scalp Health: The Unsung Hero

While many focus solely on the hair strands, experts like Kogen and stylist DeZarate stress the importance of scalp health. “At a certain point, you just gotta get in there and scrub your scalp,” DeZarate advises. Signs that you may need to wash more often include redness, flaking, excessive greasiness, and breakouts. “If you’re cleaning your hair and scalp properly, you’re preventing hair loss and possible infections,” she adds.

Kogen recommends using scalp-specific products designed to cleanse impurities rather than just focusing on the hair itself. “Let the product sit on your scalp for a moment before rinsing it off; this makes a big difference,” Dr. Wang suggests.

The Dangers of Overwashing

However, there is a fine line to tread. DeZarate warns that washing hair more than once a day can lead to overhydration of the scalp, resulting in breakouts and bumps. The key takeaway? Pay attention to how your scalp feels.

“We say don’t wash your hair too much, but you want to make sure you’re washing it enough. It’s a fine line, and you need to figure out what’s best for your hair type,” Kogen concludes.
