ICE Targets NYPD Officers Following Mamdani’s Election Victory

New York City — In a surprising twist following the election of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a recruitment campaign aimed at enticing police officers to leave the New York Police Department (NYPD). The agency’s social media message, posted on Friday, calls on officers to “Defend the Homeland” and work under a leadership that “supports and defends law enforcement—not defund or demonize it.”

This recruitment effort comes on the heels of Mamdani’s history of vocal criticism against the NYPD, including his past support for defunding the department. In a June 2020 post on X, he stated, “We don’t need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety. What we need is to #DefundTheNYPD.”

ICE’s message directly references Mamdani’s controversial stance, highlighting a significant shift in the political landscape of New York City. CNN has reached out to Mamdani’s transition team for comment, but the mayor-elect has yet to respond.

Mamdani has previously accused the NYPD of international corruption and alleged collaboration with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). In a 2023 interview, he remarked, “When the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the IDF.” However, he later clarified that he was referring to training tactics rather than direct collaboration.

As his campaign progressed, Mamdani made efforts to mend relations with law enforcement, committing to retain current Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “I am not defunding the police. I am not running to defund the police,” he asserted in August, even publicly apologizing to NYPD officers for previous comments labeling them as “racist,” “wicked,” and “corrupt.”

Despite his attempts to bridge the gap, Mamdani remains a staunch critic of ICE, asserting that he would not permit the NYPD to engage in civil immigration enforcement with the agency. This latest recruitment initiative by ICE is part of a broader strategy by the Department of Homeland Security to hire thousands of deportation officers, bolstered by $75 billion in federal funding from a recent sweeping agenda bill.

As the political climate in New York City continues to evolve, the implications of Mamdani’s election and ICE’s recruitment efforts are likely to reverberate throughout the community and law enforcement agencies for years to come.
