ICG Magazine to Discontinue Publication

The End of an Era: ICG Magazine to Cease Publication After Nearly 100 Years

International Cinematographers Guild to End Nearly Century-Old ICG Magazine

In a significant shift for the film industry, the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) has announced the closure of its nearly century-old publication, ICG Magazine. The decision comes as part of the union’s efforts to explore “new ways of connecting with members,” according to a message from national president John Lindley.

The final issue of ICG Magazine is set to be published in December. The magazine, which has been in circulation since 1929—originally under the name The International Photographer—has served as a vital platform for showcasing the work and achievements of its members, who include camera department professionals and studio publicists.

Lindley emphasized the board’s careful consideration in making this decision, stating, “This decision was not made lightly.” He expressed gratitude for the magazine’s legacy and the contributions of the many talented individuals who have been part of its history.

As the publication comes to a close, the ICG is planning to introduce a new bi-monthly printed newsletter, which will also be available online, slated for launch in early 2026. This move reflects the union’s commitment to adapting to the changing landscape of communication in the digital age.

In addition to the newsletter, the ICG launched a podcast in May, hosted by ICG Magazine executive editor David Geffner. However, the union has not commented on the future of the podcast, which has released only six episodes to date.

While ICG Magazine wraps up its long-standing run, other Hollywood unions continue to publish their own periodicals. As of now, SAG-AFTRA Magazine, DGA Monthly, Written By (from the Writers Guild of America West), and Cinemontage (from the Motion Picture Editors Guild) remain active.

In a statement regarding the magazine’s closure, the ICG affirmed, “The shared stories and connections made for nearly a century will continue to be a part of the International Cinematographers Guild’s legacy.” As the industry evolves, the ICG aims to maintain its connection with its approximately 10,000 members through innovative new platforms.
