ESPN India’s Daily Blog: Sumit Nagal’s French Open Exit and Boxing Olympic Qualifiers Update

Indian sports fans were treated to a rollercoaster of emotions on Monday as the action-packed day saw some highs and lows for the country’s athletes.

In the French Open, tennis player Sumit Nagal’s journey came to an end in the first round as he was defeated by Russian 18th seed Karen Khachanov in a one-sided match. Nagal fought hard but ultimately succumbed to a 6-2 6-0 7-5 defeat.

Meanwhile, in the Boxing Olympic Qualifiers in Bangkok, former world youth champion Ankushita Boro emerged victorious in her opening round clash against Namuun Monkhor of Mongolia in the 60kg category. Boro displayed her tactical prowess to secure a 4-1 win and keep India’s hopes alive for a Paris Olympic berth.

On the flip side, Abhimanyu Loura faced disappointment as he went down against Ireland’s Kelyn Cassidy in the 80kg weight category. Despite giving his all, Loura was unable to overcome his opponent’s strategy and lost the match 0-5.

Looking ahead, Sachin Siwach, Abhinash Jamwal, and Nishant Dev will be in action on Tuesday as they continue their quest for an Olympic quota in the Boxing Qualifiers.

In other sports news, PV Sindhu suffered a defeat in the Malaysia Masters final, while Neeraj Chopra pulled out of the Ostrava Golden Spike due to an adductor strain. However, there were moments of glory as Abhinash Jamwal and Nishant Dev secured wins in the Boxing Qualifiers, and Dipa Karmakar made history by winning gold at the Asian Senior Championships in gymnastics.

The day also saw mixed results for the Indian hockey teams, with the women’s team losing to Argentina while the men’s team emerged victorious in the FIH Pro League. In cricket, Kolkata Knight Riders clinched the IPL title with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.
