John Stamos Joins Star-Studded Cast of Jesus Christ Superstar at Hollywood Bowl
In a whirlwind turn of events, John Stamos has stepped into the spotlight, joining the cast of the Hollywood Bowl’s highly anticipated concert production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Stamos replaces Josh Gad, who was forced to withdraw from the performances after testing positive for COVID-19.
The iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical kicked off its run this weekend at the famed Los Angeles venue, featuring a stellar lineup that includes Wicked star Cynthia Erivo as Jesus and pop sensation Adam Lambert as Judas. The show opened on Friday and will continue through Sunday, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience.
Stamos announced his last-minute casting on Instagram, just a day after Gad revealed his COVID-19 diagnosis. “This is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane because… I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off,” the Full House star shared, adding, “Wish me luck. And let’s rock the Bowl.”
Gad, who was set to portray King Herod, expressed his disappointment in a heartfelt Instagram post. “Rarely have I had the opportunity to witness up close such profound brilliance and artistry,” he wrote. However, in a twist of fate, Gad tested negative by Friday and confirmed he would return to the production on Sunday, allowing Stamos to take the stage on Saturday night.
Jesus Christ Superstar, which first debuted as a concept album in 1970 and made its Broadway premiere in 1971, has seen numerous revivals over the years. This latest rendition features a talented ensemble, including Hamilton star Phillipa Soo as Mary Magdalene, Milo Manheim as Peter, and Raúl Esparza as Pontius Pilate, alongside a supporting cast of Broadway veterans.
Social media has been abuzz with praise for the concert, particularly highlighting Erivo’s powerful performance as Jesus. Entertainment reporter Ashley Lee urged fans to prepare for “a truly unforgettable performance,” while others echoed sentiments of awe, calling it “the most beautiful production” they had ever attended.
The Hollywood Bowl has a rich history of hosting star-studded concert versions of beloved Broadway shows, with past productions including Kinky Boots, Les Misérables, and Hairspray. As this weekend unfolds, audiences can expect a night filled with spectacular performances and emotional resonance, solidifying Jesus Christ Superstar as a must-see event.
