Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board Amid Epstein Controversy
In a significant shift following the release of controversial emails, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers announced on Wednesday that he is resigning from the board of OpenAI, along with several other prominent roles. This decision comes in the wake of a trove of documents from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, which revealed regular communications between Summers and the convicted sex offender.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the potential of the company, and look forward to following their progress,” Summers stated in his resignation announcement. His departure from OpenAI is part of a broader retreat from public commitments, which he had previously indicated would occur after the emails surfaced.
The emails, released by the House Oversight Committee, show that Summers and Epstein maintained a correspondence during the latter years of Epstein’s life, even as his notoriety as a convicted sex offender grew. Many of these communications date back to the late 2010s, a period marked by Epstein’s prior guilty plea to prostitution charges in Florida, yet before he faced federal sex trafficking charges and was arrested in July 2019.
While there is no evidence of illegal conduct on Summers’ part, the revelations have prompted scrutiny. In addition to his role at OpenAI, Summers has stepped down from positions with Bloomberg News, The New York Times, the Brookings Institution’s Hamilton Project, the Center for American Progress, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and the Yale Budget Lab.
Summers, who served as Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton and was a key economic adviser during the Obama administration, has also been teaching at Harvard University, where he previously served as president. CBS News has reached out to Harvard for comment regarding Summers’ recent decisions.
In a related political development, both the House and Senate voted overwhelmingly to require the Justice Department to release its files related to Epstein, sending the bill to President Trump’s desk. Trump has called for an investigation into Epstein’s connections with Summers, former President Bill Clinton, and other high-profile Democrats.
As the fallout from these revelations continues, the implications for Summers and the organizations he has been associated with remain to be seen.
