Latino Voters Prioritize Affordability and Economy in New Poll Ahead of 2026 Midterm Elections

Economic Concerns Dominate Latino Voter Sentiment Ahead of 2026 Midterms

Economic Anxiety Dominates Latino Voter Concerns Ahead of 2026 Midterms

A recent survey of 3,000 registered Latino voters reveals that economic issues are at the forefront of concerns as the nation gears up for the 2026 midterm elections. Conducted by UnidosUS, the poll highlights that cost of living, job security, and housing affordability are the primary worries for this influential voting bloc, overshadowing immigration, which ranks fifth in importance.

The Unidos Bipartisan Poll of Hispanic Voters: The Road to 2026, first reported by CBS News, shows that a staggering 53% of Latino voters cite the cost of living and inflation as their top concern. This is followed by jobs and the economy at 36%, housing at 32%, and healthcare at 30%. Immigration reform, while still significant, is only a priority for 20% of respondents. Notably, over one-third of those surveyed believe the economy has worsened over the past year, with only 14% feeling it has improved.

The survey underscores a growing discontent with the current political leadership. Nearly 65% of Latino voters believe that President Trump and congressional Republicans are not doing enough to address economic challenges, marking a 5-point increase in dissatisfaction since April. Half of the respondents fear that Trump’s economic policies will leave them worse off in the coming year.

This economic pessimism is fueling a broader discontent with Washington. A striking 81% of Latino voters feel Congress is failing in its checks-and-balances role, with 62% disapproving of the Republican Party’s leadership. The recent government shutdown has further exacerbated these sentiments, with 61% blaming Republicans for the impasse.

Clarissa Martinez de Castro, vice president of UnidosUS, emphasized the urgency of addressing economic concerns, stating, “Hispanic voters keep stressing the need to address low wages and the rising cost of living, yet feel that the administration and Republicans whom they hold most responsible for the shutdown are not focusing enough on this.”

The poll also reveals a significant shift in political alignment among Latino voters. If the midterms were held today, 52% would support the Democratic House candidate, compared to 28% for the Republican. This marks a notable shift from the 2024 elections, where Trump garnered 48% of the Latino vote.

Despite this shift, many Latino voters remain loyal to their previous choices. Among those who supported Trump in 2024, 78% would do so again, while 93% of Harris supporters would reaffirm their choice. Daniel Garza from the right-leaning LIBRE Initiative noted that while Democrats haven’t lost Latino voters, they have yet to win them back, stating, “They’re waiting for somebody to win them over with something positive.”

The survey also highlights deep concerns about civil rights and public safety. A significant 72% oppose a recent Supreme Court decision allowing immigration agents to use language and appearance as grounds for stops. Additionally, 41% fear arrest by federal immigration agents despite having legal status.

As California prepares for a special election that could reshape congressional districts, Latino voter turnout is expected to play a crucial role. The Democratic National Committee has launched a bilingual initiative to engage Latino voters, recognizing their potential impact.

With economic issues dominating the political landscape, the results of this survey signal a critical moment for both parties as they seek to address the concerns of Latino voters ahead of the 2026 midterms. As economic conditions evolve, so too may the political allegiances of this vital electorate.
