Newport News Launches Contractors Academy to Empower Small Businesses

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — In a significant move to bolster local entrepreneurship, the City of Newport News has unveiled its Fall 2025 Contractors Academy, aimed at equipping small businesses with the essential tools to compete for government contracts. The five-session workshop series kicked off on September 25 and will run through November 6, taking place every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Newport News Main Street Library.

The academy is designed to provide practical guidance on a range of topics, including identifying contract opportunities, preparing competitive proposals, and navigating the often-complex procurement processes. Small business leaders are encouraged to attend the full series or select individual sessions that align with their specific interests.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy,” said Mayor Phillip Jones. “Through programs like the Contractors Academy, we’re helping entrepreneurs gain the tools and expertise to pursue city contracts and expand their businesses right here in Newport News.”

In addition to the Contractors Academy, the city will host the “Serve the City: Food Service Provider Forum” on October 9 and 23. This event will offer restaurant owners, caterers, food truck operators, and other food service professionals an insider’s view of how the city procures food services. Attendees will hear from representatives of the Hampton & Peninsula Health Districts, Newport News Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue, Fire Department, and Parks & Recreation.

Looking ahead, the city plans to offer advanced sessions in Spring 2026, focusing on critical areas such as financing, insurance, and other key aspects of business development. These initiatives underscore Newport News’ commitment to fostering economic growth and ensuring that all business owners have the resources they need to thrive.
