Fortnum & Mason CEO: Trump’s Tariffs Impacting Tea Exports to the US

Fortnum & Mason Faces Sales Challenges Amid Trump’s Trade War and Rising Tariffs on Luxury Tea Exports to the US

Fortnum & Mason Faces Challenges Amid Trump’s Trade War

London – The iconic British retailer Fortnum & Mason is feeling the pinch from the ongoing trade war initiated by former President Donald Trump, which has significantly impacted its luxury tea exports to the United States. Tom Athron, the chief executive of the 318-year-old establishment, revealed that new tariffs and stricter regulations have forced the retailer to increase prices and alter its shipping practices.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Athron explained that recent changes in U.S. customs regulations have complicated the tea industry’s operations. “If you’ve got tea from China and India in your tea, then its country of origin is deemed to be China or India, and therefore those enormous tariffs apply,” he stated. This has resulted in steep delivery fees for American customers, with a 250g canister of Fortnum’s Royal Blend tea now retailing for $27.85, plus a delivery charge starting at $25.41.

The shift comes on the heels of Trump’s imposition of a 50% tariff on imports from India, a move aimed at penalizing the country for purchasing Russian oil. Earlier this year, tariffs on Chinese goods soared as high as 145% before being reduced to 30% in May to facilitate negotiations between the two economic giants.

The retailer, which holds two royal warrants, previously enjoyed a tariff-free status on most of its U.S. deliveries. However, the recent changes have led to a decline in sales, particularly among expatriates and international buyers who often purchase Fortnum & Mason products as gifts. “If you’re living in New York and I’m sending a present to you, I want to be sure that you’re not going to be landed with a $200 bill on receipt of your parcel,” Athron noted, highlighting the logistical challenges posed by the new regulations.

Despite these hurdles, overseas sales of Fortnum & Mason’s goods, including its renowned hampers, reached £12.5 million in the year ending July 2024, accounting for approximately 5.5% of total revenues. However, the retailer has had to raise prices domestically as well, with the cost of a 250g canister of Breakfast Blend tea increasing by nearly 40% over the past five years due to broader inflationary pressures.

As the world’s two largest economies engage in ongoing discussions to resolve trade tensions, Fortnum & Mason remains committed to navigating these challenges while maintaining its reputation for quality and luxury.
