Portland Business Leaders Oppose Trump Administration’s Actions Amid City Recovery Efforts

Portland Business Leaders Push Back Against Trump Administration’s Controversial Action

PORTLAND, Ore. — In a bold response to recent federal actions, the Portland Metro Chamber has issued a letter condemning the Trump Administration’s deployment of federal resources to the city, calling it “counterproductive to Portland’s recovery.” The letter, released early this morning, urges the administration to abandon what it describes as outdated narratives and disparagement of the city.

The call for unity has garnered significant support, with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson among the more than 100 signatories. The letter invites other organizations and elected officials to join this growing coalition, emphasizing a collective stance against the federal government’s approach.

The Trump Administration’s announcement, which likened Portland to a “war zone,” has raised eyebrows among local leaders, particularly given the city’s recent improvements in public safety. According to the Metro Chamber, homicides in Portland have dropped by 51% in the first half of 2025, marking the largest reduction among major U.S. cities. Additionally, gun violence has seen a nearly 60% decline since 2022.

Organizations such as Better Portland, Greater Portland Inc., and the Oregon Business Council have joined the “Call for Unity,” reinforcing the message that the city’s recovery is on the right track and that federal intervention is unwarranted during what has been a relatively calm September.

The stated purpose of the deployment appears to be the protection of the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, which has faced minimal protests in recent months. However, local leaders argue that such measures are unnecessary and could hinder the progress Portland has made in addressing crime and fostering community stability.

As the situation unfolds, the Portland business community remains steadfast in its commitment to a unified and constructive dialogue, urging the Trump Administration to reconsider its approach and focus on collaboration rather than confrontation.
