Sports Updates: Mariners, Pete Carroll, Seattle Storm, and WWU Volleyball
The Seattle Mariners are hoping to turn their luck around as they face the Dodgers tonight in an effort to end their disastrous road trip on a high note. After a tough loss to the Dodgers last night, the Mariners are looking to bounce back and avoid a sweep. Pinch-hitter Jason Heyward delivered a go-ahead 3-run homer in the eighth inning to secure the win for the Dodgers in the previous game. The Mariners had an early lead with RBI hits from Jorge Polanco, but the Dodgers rallied back to secure the victory. All-Star closer Andres Munoz gave up the game-winning home run, marking his second consecutive appearance allowing a homer. Fellow All-Star Logan Gilbert will take the mound tonight in hopes of salvaging the road trip. The game will be broadcast on KPUG with coverage starting at 6:00 and first pitch at 7:10.
In other sports news, former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has announced his plans to teach a class at USC in the near future. Carroll has been keeping a low profile since parting ways with the Seahawks but mentioned that he has been spending time at UW Huskies practices. He hinted at a possible return to coaching in the future. Carroll previously led USC’s football program to two national championships during his tenure as head coach.
The Seattle Storm secured a victory against the Washington Mystics with a strong performance from their Big Three players. Nneka Ogwumike, Jewell Loyd, and Skylar Diggins-Smith combined for 59 points in the win. The Storm now sit just a game and a half behind Minnesota for first place in the Western Conference. They will have a rematch against the Mystics on Monday night.
Additionally, Western Washington University’s volleyball team has been recognized in the preseason coaches poll, being picked to finish third in the GNAC. The young team is coming off a third-place finish in the conference last season and will open their season on Sept. 5 as hosts of the WWU Invitational in Bellingham. The fall sports season at Western is gearing up, with the women’s soccer team playing its first exhibition match tonight and the official opening day for the season on Thursday, Sept. 5.
