Pennsylvania Democrats Elect Eugene DePasquale as New State Chairman
September 6, 2025 | 3:00 PM
In a pivotal moment for the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, former Auditor General Eugene DePasquale has been elected as the new state chairman. The decision, made during the party’s fall meeting at the Eden Resort & Suites in Lancaster County, comes at a crucial time as Democrats seek to reverse recent voter registration losses and recover from Republican gains in the 2024 elections.
“I’m honored by the support of my fellow Pennsylvania Democrats — and I’m ready to get to work,” DePasquale stated shortly after his election. He emphasized the urgent need for the party to rebuild its infrastructure, enhance voter registration efforts, and regain the trust of communities that feel overlooked.
At 54, DePasquale brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as the state auditor general for two terms from 2013 to 2021. He previously represented a district in York County and has faced electoral challenges, including a loss in the 2020 race against Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and a recent defeat in the attorney general race.
Backed by Governor Josh Shapiro and former chair Sharif Street, DePasquale is acutely aware of the challenges ahead. “We need to get back to the basics,” he said, calling for a renewed focus on listening to voters and expanding outreach efforts. He criticized recent GOP tax cuts, arguing they disproportionately benefit the wealthy while harming essential services like Medicaid and food assistance programs.
As of September 1, the voter registration gap between Democrats and Republicans has narrowed significantly, with Democrats now leading by just 174,000 voters, down from a 685,000-voter advantage in November 2020. This shift underscores the urgency of DePasquale’s mission to revitalize the party ahead of the critical 2026 elections, where Shapiro will seek re-election and multiple legislative and congressional seats will be contested.
In a show of solidarity, Democratic U.S. Senator John Fetterman pledged $100,000 to support DePasquale’s leadership, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver for the people of Pennsylvania. “We have always been the party that stands up and fights for working families,” Fetterman stated, echoing DePasquale’s call to action.
As the Republican Party prepares for its own fall meeting later this month, where they are expected to endorse Treasurer Stacy Garrity as their gubernatorial candidate, the stage is set for a heated political landscape in Pennsylvania. DePasquale’s leadership will be crucial as Democrats strive to reclaim their footing and advocate for the needs of everyday citizens in the coming years.
“Let’s get to work,” DePasquale concluded, rallying his party to unite and focus on the challenges ahead.
