Republican Party Endorses Stacy Garrity for Governor in Bid to Unseat Josh Shapiro
Republican Insiders Rally Behind Stacy Garrity in Bid to Oust Shapiro
State College, PA – In a decisive move to challenge Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro’s bid for re-election, Republican Party insiders formally endorsed State Treasurer Stacy Garrity this weekend. The endorsement, secured during a gathering at the Penn Stater Conference Center, positions Garrity as the GOP’s leading candidate for the gubernatorial race next year.
Garrity, a 61-year-old retired Army Reserve colonel from Bradford County, emphasized her commitment to fiscal responsibility during her acceptance speech. “I have served as a watchdog for taxpayer dollars since 2020, and I will continue that mindset as your governor,” she declared. Her campaign slogan, “Help is on the way,” resonated with attendees as she promised to make Pennsylvania a safer, stronger, and more prosperous place for families and businesses.
While Garrity was the sole candidate seeking the endorsement, the vote was not without dissent. A few voices in the crowd expressed opposition during the voice vote, highlighting potential divisions within the party.
If Garrity secures the GOP nomination in the May primary and successfully unseats Shapiro next November, she would make history as the first woman elected governor of Pennsylvania and the first Republican to hold the office since Tom Corbett in 2010.
Shapiro’s campaign chose not to comment on Garrity’s endorsement, but his influence was palpable at the GOP meeting. Attendees received sunglasses emblazoned with “Shady Shapiro,” a playful jab at the governor’s public persona. Garrity took the opportunity to criticize Shapiro’s leadership, suggesting that his ambition for higher office often overshadows his responsibilities in Harrisburg. “There is no more dangerous place in Harrisburg than standing between Josh Shapiro and a camera,” she quipped.
The Democratic Party’s newly elected chair, Eugene DePasquale, responded to Garrity’s endorsement by highlighting her alignment with controversial GOP policies, including support for federal tax cuts and the overturning of Roe v. Wade. “If Stacy Garrity becomes the GOP insiders’ pick for Governor, they will be making a clear choice: pledging allegiance to a candidate who has pledged her own allegiance to Donald Trump and a dangerous agenda that will hurt the people of Pennsylvania,” DePasquale stated.
Before facing Shapiro, Garrity may encounter competition for the GOP nomination. State Senator Doug Mastriano, the party’s 2022 gubernatorial candidate who lost to Shapiro, has hinted at a potential run but has yet to formally announce his candidacy.
In a strategic move, Republican state committee members opted to delay endorsing a candidate for lieutenant governor, leaving the field open for potential candidates to emerge.
The atmosphere at the meeting was a mix of enthusiasm and solemnity, as speakers addressed the recent killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, urging unity against political violence. Pennsylvania GOP Chairman Greg Rothman emphasized the importance of winning the gubernatorial election to thwart Shapiro’s presidential ambitions, as he is seen as a contender for the Democratic Party’s 2028 nomination.
Rothman also reminded attendees of the upcoming retention races for three sitting Supreme Court Justices, urging members to mobilize for what he described as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to effect real change in the commonwealth.
As the political landscape heats up, all eyes will be on Garrity as she navigates the path to the GOP nomination and prepares for a potential showdown with Governor Shapiro in the 2024 election.
