SALT LAKE CITY — In a bold move to reshape the political landscape, the Utah Democratic Party is calling on self-identified “Republicans In Name Only” (RINOs) to abandon their GOP affiliations and return to the Democratic fold. This appeal, made by party chair Brian King, comes as many Utahns grapple with the complexities of a political system dominated by the Republican Party.
“Many people say, ‘I’m a Democrat, but I want to have an influence in party politics here in Utah,'” King stated during a press conference on Thursday. His message is clear: Democrats registered as Republicans should reconsider their party allegiance to help build a stronger Democratic presence in the state.
RINOs, a term often used to describe Republicans who hold more moderate views, are not uncommon in Utah. Many Democrats register as Republicans to participate in GOP primaries, where they can influence candidate selection. This strategy has allowed more centrist candidates to emerge, countering the hardline conservatives often favored by GOP delegates.
One self-identified RINO, who spoke to FOX 13 News on the condition of anonymity, explained her rationale: “I register Republican because so many things that impact my everyday life are decided in a closed primary election. If I want any say in the issues that affect me, I have to be registered Republican.”
King argues that this tactic is becoming increasingly ineffective, especially as the Republican Party shifts further right under the influence of figures like former President Trump. “It’s time for RINOs to stop pretending,” he said, urging them to embrace their Democratic identity and contribute to a party capable of challenging Republican dominance.
Utah Republican Party Chair Robert Axson echoed King’s sentiments, commending the Democrats for their call to action. “People should plant roots where they feel most comfortable,” he said, while also expressing hope that Republicans remain committed to the party’s core ideals.
However, the RINO interviewed by FOX 13 expressed skepticism about switching parties without seeing more Democratic candidates on the ballot. “If there were candidates to vote for in primary elections, then there would be some sort of incentive,” she said, highlighting a perceived lack of viable Democratic options in local races.
King acknowledged this concern, noting that the Democratic Party is actively working to recruit candidates for upcoming elections. “We’re seeing a real influx of interest in running as Democrats in the 2025 municipal elections,” he said, emphasizing the importance of building a competitive Democratic presence in Utah.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Utah Democratic Party’s call for RINOs to come home may signal a pivotal moment in the state’s political narrative.
