2nd International Conference on Wellness: A Call for Health Awareness and Community Engagement
Garhwal, India — The 2nd International Conference on Wellness, organized by PRAYATNA in collaboration with the Hind Institute of Medical Sciences, successfully convened this week, aiming to elevate awareness about wellness in communities across the nation. Building on the success of its inaugural edition, Wellness Con-2019, this year’s conference brought together health professionals, educators, and community leaders to discuss the critical intersection of health, education, and nutrition.
Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, a distinguished figure in the medical field and recipient of the Padma Shri, delivered a compelling keynote address titled “Health Is Not Only an Asset, but a Resource Which Must Be Nurtured by All.” He emphasized that the pillars of a nation’s progress lie in Health, Education, and Nutrition (HEN), urging attendees to adopt a holistic approach to wellness.
In his presentation, Dr. Sanjay introduced his innovative wellness model, DEWS — Diet, Exercise, Work, and Sleep — describing it as a “no-cost health booster” that can be easily integrated into daily life. He underscored the importance of preventive healthcare, advocating for regular medical check-ups and early diagnosis as essential strategies to reduce the burden of avoidable diseases in India.
“Any deviation from normal values should serve as an early warning,” Dr. Sanjay stated, highlighting the necessity of basic health monitoring tools in every household. He recommended keeping items such as weighing scales, measuring tapes, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, glucometers, and pulse oximeters readily available to promote proactive health management.
Dr. Sanjay also called for the launch of a nationwide Health Screening Awareness Campaign, reinforcing the age-old adage, “Prevention is better than cure.” He connected the dots between individual wellness and national development, encouraging citizens to rally behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), asserting that a healthy and educated populace is vital for the country’s advancement.
Born in 1956 in Saidnagar, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Sanjay has made significant contributions to medicine throughout his illustrious career. After earning his MBBS from GSBM Medical College, Kanpur, in 1980, he honed his skills at prestigious institutions like PGI Chandigarh and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. His expertise has been recognized internationally, with fellowships from countries including Japan, the USA, and Australia.
Dr. Sanjay’s groundbreaking work in surgery has not only earned him accolades but also secured him a place in the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records. Notably, in 2005, he set a world record for successfully removing the largest bone tumor, a feat that garnered global recognition.
His leadership extends beyond clinical excellence; he is the founding president of the Uttarakhand branch of the Indian Orthopaedic Association and an active member of numerous national and international medical organizations. Over the years, Dr. Sanjay has received numerous honors, including the Uttarakhand Ratna and the National Healthcare Excellence Award, solidifying his status as a health icon in India.
As the conference concluded, participants left inspired by Dr. Sanjay’s vision for a healthier future, equipped with practical tools and knowledge to foster wellness in their communities. The 2nd International Conference on Wellness stands as a testament to the collective effort needed to prioritize health as a fundamental resource for national development.
