NPR Welcomes Kara Platoni as Senior Business Editor
NPR’s chief business editor, Pallavi Gogoi, announced on Tuesday that Kara Platoni will be joining the team as a senior business editor. In her new role, Platoni will oversee coverage of technology, cars, and energy.
Platoni comes to NPR from Wired, where she served as the senior science editor, leading coverage on biotech, space, climate, and energy technologies. Her diverse background includes being an assistant dean and lecturer at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and authoring the book “We Have the Technology” about biohacking and sensory perception.
With a passion for road trips and mix tapes, Platoni’s career began in radio at KSPC as the station’s music director, deejay, and live band engineer. She has also worked with the nonprofit Office of Letters and Light and edited economy, health, and environment stories for the 19th News.
Platoni’s impressive journalism career has earned her numerous awards, including the Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Award and the Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award for young science journalists. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley and Scripps College.
Kara Platoni will start her new role at NPR on September 9, based in San Francisco with plans to work in Washington DC for a few weeks during her onboarding process. NPR is thrilled to have her on board and looks forward to the energy and expertise she will bring to the team. Welcome to NPR, Kara!
