Special Prosecutor Appointed to Investigate Jay Jones’ Community Service Completion Amid Reckless Driving Conviction
Special Prosecutor Appointed in Jay Jones’ Reckless Driving Case, Intensifying Virginia AG Race
RICHMOND, Va. — The race for Virginia’s Attorney General has taken a dramatic turn as a special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate whether Democratic candidate Jay Jones fulfilled his community service requirements following a reckless driving conviction. This development adds further tension to an already heated contest against incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares.
In 2022, Jones was caught driving at a staggering 116 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-64 in New Kent County. Following the incident, he was fined and ordered to complete 1,000 hours of community service. The current inquiry focuses on whether he completed the mandated 500 hours for both the Virginia chapter of the NAACP and the MOM PAC in 2023.
Roanoke’s Commonwealth’s Attorney Don Caldwell has been appointed as the special prosecutor after Nathan Green, the previous prosecutor, recused himself due to a potential conflict of interest. This recusal highlights the complexities surrounding the case, as the New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney also stepped aside for similar reasons.
In an exclusive interview with News 3’s Kurt Williams, Jones addressed the investigation, stating, “Several years ago, I made a mistake, but I was held accountable by the court. It was reviewed and accepted by the Commonwealth’s attorney and by the judge. We need leaders in Virginia who will take accountability for their actions.” He further criticized Miyares for not holding former President Donald Trump accountable, framing the election as a battle for integrity and accountability.
Miyares, however, has seized on the investigation to question Jones’ suitability for office. “It is not possible for Jay Jones to fulfill the duties of that office while under an open criminal investigation,” he stated in a press release.
This latest controversy follows reports from the National Review regarding text messages sent by Jones in 2022 that allegedly included threats of violence against a state lawmaker and his family. Miyares has called for Jones to withdraw from the race due to these revelations, but Jones remains resolute in his campaign.
As the election approaches, both candidates are gearing up for a showdown, with public scrutiny intensifying. Tune into News 3 on Tuesday, Oct. 28, for exclusive interviews with both Jay Jones and Jason Miyares, as they navigate this contentious political landscape.
