Retired Navy Officer Jay Furman Wins Republican Nomination to Challenge Embattled Representative Henry Cuellar in Texas

In a surprising turn of events, retired Navy officer Jay Furman has secured the Republican nomination to challenge Representative Henry Cuellar of South Texas in the upcoming November election. The Associated Press reported that Mr. Furman emerged victorious in a runoff against Lazaro Garza Jr., a rancher, after both candidates were the top vote-getters in a crowded primary back in March.

Representative Cuellar, a centrist Democrat, has long been considered a strong contender for re-election in Texas’ 28th Congressional District. However, the political landscape has shifted slightly in favor of Republicans following Mr. Cuellar’s recent indictment on federal bribery and money-laundering charges. The allegations claim that Mr. Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, accepted over $598,000 from a Mexican bank and an oil company owned by the government of Azerbaijan over a seven-year period. Despite the charges, Mr. Cuellar has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Mr. Cuellar’s fundraising efforts have far surpassed those of his Republican opponent, with nearly $2 million raised by the end of March and over $415,000 cash on hand. In comparison, Mr. Furman has raised just under $195,500 and has approximately $2,013 cash on hand as of May.

Despite the financial gap, election forecasters have shifted their ratings for the general election from likely Democratic to leans Democratic, indicating a potential shift in the political landscape. Mr. Furman, who has made immigration a central focus of his campaign, aligns himself with former President Donald Trump’s hard-line stance on the issue. He also promises to address inflation, support small businesses, and combat what he calls “‘woke’ insanity.”

In an interview, Mr. Furman criticized the charges against Mr. Cuellar as reflective of the “Cuellar dynasty” and raised concerns about the Department of Justice’s handling of the case, echoing sentiments expressed by Mr. Trump regarding the alleged weaponization of the department against conservatives.
