New Solar Farm Proposal Near Rotherham: Infinis Solar Developments Plans Maltby Solar Park

New Solar Farm Proposal Near Rotherham Sparks Interest Amid Larger Developments

Rotherham, UK – In a significant move towards renewable energy, Infinis Solar Developments Ltd has submitted plans for a new solar energy park at Holme Hall Quarry, Maltby Colliery. This proposal comes at a time when the region is already abuzz with discussions surrounding the much larger Whitestone Solar Farm project, which promises to be one of the largest solar installations in the UK.

The proposed Maltby Solar Park will cover approximately 17.76 hectares, straddling the boundaries of Rotherham and Doncaster. While the solar panels will be installed solely within Doncaster, the project will include underground cabling in Rotherham to connect to the existing grid at Maltby Colliery.

Infinis, known for its leadership in generating low-carbon power from captured methane, aims to utilize the site, which has been previously disturbed and capped as part of a restoration scheme. The solar park will feature 14.4 hectares of photovoltaic panels mounted on metal frameworks up to 3 meters high, along with a battery energy storage system (BESS). The facility is expected to operate for up to 40 years, contributing significantly to the region’s renewable energy goals.

The developers emphasize that the site is classified as “grey belt land,” and their approach focuses on utilizing brownfield sites to preserve greenfield areas and agricultural land. “The proposed development reuses a previously disturbed site associated with Maltby Colliery and will operate for 40 years,” stated ICP consultants representing Infinis.

In addition to energy generation, the project includes environmental mitigation measures, such as planting 1.2 hectares of native trees and shrubs, establishing 770 meters of new hedgerow, and enhancing existing hedgerows to promote biodiversity.

The Maltby Solar Park proposal is part of a broader trend in the area, with plans also emerging for the Thurcroft Interchange Energy Park and a 25 MVA solar farm west of Firsby Lane, between Hooton Roberts and Conisbrough.

As the region gears up for a potential energy revolution, the Whitestone Solar Farm remains a focal point of attention. If realized, it could generate up to 750 MW of energy, enough to power approximately 250,000 homes, marking a significant milestone for Yorkshire’s renewable energy landscape.

The community’s response to these developments will be crucial as Rotherham and Doncaster navigate the balance between energy needs and environmental preservation. As discussions unfold, the future of renewable energy in the region looks promising, with local authorities and residents keenly watching the progress of these ambitious projects.
