Major Aerial Assault on Kyiv: Russia Launches Largest Drone and Missile Attack Since Invasion

Kyiv Under Siege: Russia Launches Largest Aerial Attack Since Invasion

KYIV, Ukraine — In a devastating escalation of hostilities, Russia unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine’s capital on Sunday, marking the largest aerial assault since the onset of the war. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of at least two lives, including a one-year-old child, and left significant damage in its wake, with smoke billowing from the roof of a key government building.

According to Ukrainian officials, the assault involved a staggering 805 drones and decoys, alongside 13 missiles of various types. Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force, confirmed that this was the most extensive drone strike since the full-scale invasion began. In a remarkable defense effort, Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 747 drones and four missiles.

The attack targeted 37 locations across Ukraine, with nine missile hits and 56 drone strikes reported. Debris from the intercepted projectiles fell across eight different sites, including residential areas. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a plume of smoke rising from the Cabinet of Ministers building, though it remains unclear whether this was due to a direct hit or falling debris. This incident marks a significant shift in Russia’s strategy, as government buildings in central Kyiv had previously been spared from direct attacks.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko condemned the assault, stating, “For the first time, the government building was damaged by an enemy attack, including the roof and upper floors. We will restore the buildings, but lost lives cannot be returned.” She called for a global response that goes beyond words, urging for increased sanctions against Russian oil and gas.

The attack comes on the heels of a recent meeting among European leaders, who pressed Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek an end to the conflict. Despite these diplomatic overtures, hopes for peace talks appear to be dwindling. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his willingness to negotiate with Putin, while also urging U.S. President Donald Trump to impose stringent sanctions on Russia to compel an end to hostilities.

As Kyiv grapples with the aftermath of this unprecedented assault, the international community watches closely, with many calling for decisive action to support Ukraine in its ongoing struggle for sovereignty and peace.
