President Claudia Sheinbaum Files Complaint After Sexual Harassment Incident

Mexico City – In a bold move against sexual harassment, President Claudia Sheinbaum has officially filed a complaint with the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office following an unsettling encounter while walking from the National Palace to the Ministry of Public Education (SEP).

The incident, which was captured on video and quickly circulated on social media, involved a man who approached Sheinbaum while visibly intoxicated and hugged her from behind without consent. “It was an unfortunate episode,” Sheinbaum recounted. “We were walking to the SEP because we were running late, and it was faster to go on foot. Many people greeted us respectfully, until this person, totally drunk, came near.”

Sheinbaum emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating that it cannot be dismissed as trivial. “Sexual harassment is a criminal offense in Mexico City,” she declared, advocating for a nationwide review to ensure consistent legal classification across all states. “No man has the right to invade our personal space. If it is not considered a crime in every state, it should be. We will review the legislation and launch a national campaign for respect toward women,” she announced.

In response to the rising concerns about violence and harassment in public spaces, the Ministry of Women is set to roll out a campaign aimed at raising awareness and promoting safety for women. “There must be respect for women in every sense. It is a matter of dignity and defending our rights,” Sheinbaum affirmed.

Despite the distressing encounter, Sheinbaum remains resolute in her commitment to engaging with the public. “We are not going to change who we are. We cannot isolate ourselves. There is no known risk, and if there were, the Security Cabinet would let me know. We will stay close to the people, as always,” she stated.

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about the need for stronger protections against harassment and violence, highlighting the importance of creating safe public spaces for all citizens. As Sheinbaum leads the charge for reform, her actions serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and safety in Mexico.
