A Journey Through Time: Tillotama Shome Reflects on a Rejected Passport Photo and Her Upcoming Film Debut

Tillotama Shome Reflects on Nostalgia and New Beginnings as ‘Baksho Bondi’ Set to Premiere at IFFM 2025

Mumbai, Aug 11 (IANS) — In a heartfelt social media post, acclaimed actress Tillotama Shome took her followers on a nostalgic journey, sharing a rejected passport photo from 2004 that was turned down due to her smile. The actress, who is known for her powerful performances in independent cinema, reminisced about the moment she was preparing to leave for New York on a full scholarship.

“2004: The rejected passport photo because of the smile. And yet we kept it because I was leaving home to study in New York,” she wrote on Instagram. Shome reflected on the significance of that photo, noting how it captured not just a moment in time but also the nerves and excitement of embarking on a new adventure. “Passport photos are a world unto themselves,” she mused, emphasizing their role in marking pivotal life changes.

Shome’s candid post also touched on the personal sacrifices she made, including cutting her hair short to save on hair care expenses. “Good things do happen. Hair does grow back, mostly,” she added, highlighting the bittersweet nature of nostalgia.

In more recent news, Shome is set to grace the screen in her latest project, the Bengali film Baksho Bondi – Shadowbox, which will open the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025 as its inaugural film. Co-directed by Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi, this marks their directorial debut, and the film had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.

Set against the backdrop of a dusty Kolkata suburb, Baksho Bondi features Shome in the role of Maya, weaving a poignant narrative of love, resilience, and the quiet strength of a working woman navigating her everyday life. The film’s opening night screening is scheduled for August 14 in Melbourne, supported by the Victorian Government.

The IFFM, running from August 14 to 24, will also host its Awards Night on August 15, celebrating cinematic excellence across both film and OTT categories.

Known for her compelling performances in films like Monsoon Wedding, A Death in the Gunj, and the acclaimed series Delhi Crime, Shome continues to captivate audiences with her unique storytelling and powerful portrayals. As she prepares for the festival, her reflections on the past serve as a reminder of the journeys that shape us, both on and off the screen.
