Trump Urges Republicans to Use ‘Nuclear Option’ to End Government Shutdown

In a bold move, former President Donald Trump called on Republicans Thursday to invoke the so-called “nuclear option” to change Senate rules, allowing legislation to end the ongoing 30-day government shutdown to pass with a simple majority vote.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump urged GOP leaders to “play their ‘TRUMP CARD’” and eliminate the filibuster, declaring, “Get rid of it, NOW!” His comments come as the shutdown continues to impact federal services and employees, raising concerns among citizens and lawmakers alike.

During his recent trip to Asia, Trump reflected on the shutdown, noting that many questioned how Democrats managed to bring the government to a standstill. “Why did the powerful Republicans allow them to do it?” he pondered. He expressed frustration over the situation, stating, “The fact is, in flying back, I thought a great deal about that question, WHY?”

Trump praised Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson for their efforts but criticized Democrats, labeling them as “Crazed Lunatics” suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He asserted that the Democrats’ demands to reopen the government would ultimately harm American citizens, a sentiment echoed by many in the Republican Party.

The current legislative impasse stems from the 60-vote threshold required for bills to pass the Senate, which has thwarted Republican attempts to advance a short-term funding resolution. Since the government funding lapsed on October 1, Senate Democrats have rejected Trump-backed proposals more than a dozen times, leaving Republicans needing five additional votes to push their bill forward.

Trump pointed out that Democrats previously fought for three years to eliminate the filibuster but were thwarted by Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. He argued that the Democrats understand the power that comes with a simple majority, warning that they would seek to expand the Supreme Court and grant statehood to Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico if given the chance.

“If we did what we should be doing, it would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying ‘SHUT DOWN,’” Trump asserted. He emphasized that without the legislative filibuster, Republicans could secure “the best Judges, the best US Attorneys, the best of everything.”

In a separate post, he reiterated his stance, stating, “BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THE DEMOCRATS HAVE GONE STONE COLD ‘CRAZY,’ THE CHOICE IS CLEAR — INITIATE THE ‘NUCLEAR OPTION,’ GET RID OF THE FILIBUSTER AND, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Despite Trump’s fervent call to action, Senate Majority Leader Thune had previously pledged to preserve the filibuster when Republicans regained control of the upper chamber. Earlier this month, he dismissed the idea of using the nuclear option to resolve the shutdown, indicating that he had not discussed it with the White House.

As the standoff continues, the pressure mounts on Republican leaders to navigate the complexities of Senate rules while addressing the urgent needs of a nation in limbo.
