Trump Claims Wray Misled About Agency’s January 6 Actions Following Comey’s Indictment

Trump Accuses Former FBI Director Wray of Lying About January 6th Riot Agents

Trump Accuses FBI Director Wray of Lying About January 6th Events

In a dramatic escalation of his ongoing feud with the FBI, former President Donald Trump took to social media on Saturday to accuse current FBI Director Christopher Wray of lying about the agency’s involvement during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. This accusation comes just days after Trump’s administration indicted Wray’s predecessor, James Comey, on charges of making false statements and obstructing justice.

Trump claimed, without providing evidence, that the FBI had “secretly placed” agents among the crowd at the Capitol, alleging they acted as “agitators and insurrectionists” rather than law enforcement officials. “This is different from what Director Christopher Wray stated, over and over again!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “FBI Agents were at, and in, the January 6th Protest, probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists.”

Despite Trump’s assertions, a Justice Department watchdog previously reported that no undercover FBI agents were present at the Capitol during the riot. However, the report did note that 26 paid FBI informants were in Washington, D.C., that day.

Trump’s accusations have drawn sharp rebukes from political opponents. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated, “Donald Trump is lying to the American people about the events of January 6.” He emphasized that Trump cannot justify his role in inciting a mob that attacked the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

The former president’s comments come amid a broader campaign against perceived political adversaries. Trump has previously expressed frustration over the legal actions taken against him, suggesting that the Justice Department should pursue the strongest cases against his opponents.

In a twist, Trump also reflected on his decision to nominate Wray as FBI director, attributing the recommendation to former ally Chris Christie. “Christopher Wray was recommended to me by Sloppy Chris Christie when Chris was in my ‘good graces’ — which was a very long time ago!” Trump quipped.

As the political landscape continues to shift, the fallout from Trump’s accusations against Wray and the ongoing legal battles surrounding Comey are sure to keep the spotlight on the former president and his contentious relationship with federal law enforcement.

CNN has reached out to Wray for comment, but the FBI has yet to respond to Trump’s latest claims. As the investigation into the events of January 6 continues, the implications of Trump’s statements could reverberate through the political sphere for months to come.
