NEW YORK – The ambitious $16 billion Gateway Tunnel project, designed to enhance train service between New York and New Jersey, is now at the center of a heated political battle as President Donald Trump threatens to cut funding. This infrastructure initiative, which aims to construct a new rail tunnel and rehabilitate the aging existing tunnels under the Hudson River, has garnered bipartisan support, especially amid a closely watched gubernatorial race in New Jersey.

Construction has already commenced at multiple sites, with hundreds of workers actively engaged as of mid-October. However, Trump’s recent remarks have cast a shadow over the project’s future. “I’m cutting the project,” he declared in an interview with FOX News, scheduled to air on October 19. “The project is going to be dead. It is pretty much dead right now,” he added, signaling a potential halt to what many consider the most critical infrastructure project in the nation.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a staunch advocate for the Gateway project, responded to Trump’s threats by labeling them as “petty revenge politics.” He emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “Gateway is the most important infrastructure project in America, period. It will keep our economy moving, our region connected, and tens of thousands of union workers on the job.”

Her opponent, Republican Jack Ciattarelli, while endorsed by Trump, also pledged to advocate for the project, stating, “New Jersey needs a Governor who has the standing to work with, and when necessary disagree with, the President.”

The project is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs and generate billions in economic activity, with plans to expand passenger rail capacity from two tracks to four. Completion is projected for 2035, with the rehabilitation of the existing tunnels anticipated by 2038.

As the political landscape evolves, experts suggest that while Trump’s actions may delay the project, outright cancellation is unlikely. Alon Levy, a public transportation research scholar at NYU, noted, “Cancellation will not actually save money.”
