Trump Considers National Guard Deployment to Portland Amid Ongoing Protests

Portland, OR — President Donald Trump hinted on Friday that Portland could be the next city targeted for National Guard deployment, following a surge of protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). During a press briefing, Trump acknowledged he had made a decision regarding troop deployment but withheld specific details, stating, “Portland, it’s unbelievable what’s going on in Portland. The destruction of the city. I’m going to look at it now.”

The president’s comments came after a Fox News report highlighted the frustrations of a local resident living near the ICE facility, who complained about sleepless nights due to ongoing protests. Trump claimed that Portland police were neglecting to respond to related assaults, asserting, “We’ll be able to stop that very easily.”

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson quickly countered the president’s assertions, declaring that the city does not require federal intervention. “We are proud that Portland police have successfully protected freedom of expression while addressing occasional violence and property destruction,” Wilson stated, emphasizing the city’s commitment to its identity as a sanctuary city.

Trump’s remarks about Portland follow similar threats directed at other cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, and New Orleans. He has already deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., where the military presence has faced legal scrutiny. A federal judge recently ruled the deployment in Los Angeles illegal, while in Washington, an analysis revealed that 80% of charges resulting from arrests by troops were minor offenses.

The president’s renewed focus on Portland is reminiscent of his first term, during which he labeled the city an “anarchist jurisdiction” amid widespread protests in 2020. Those protests saw federal officers clashing with demonstrators, leading to accusations of excessive force and civil rights violations.

In his latest comments, Trump alleged, without evidence, that recent protesters are “paid agitators,” a claim that has been met with skepticism by local officials. The protests have often turned confrontational, with demonstrators expressing their discontent through graffiti and vocal opposition to ICE.

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield responded to Trump’s threats, stating that his office is prepared to take legal action against any federal overreach. “The president may have a lot of power, but he has to stay in his lane,” Rayfield asserted.

As tensions rise, the situation in Portland remains fluid. With protests expected to continue, local leaders are bracing for potential federal intervention while advocating for the rights of their community.
