Zelensky Stands Firm: No Land Concessions as Trump Prepares to Meet Putin in Alaska
Zelensky Stands Firm on Donbas as Trump Prepares for Alaska Summit with Putin
In a dramatic escalation of tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected Russian demands for territorial concessions in the Donbas region. This comes as former U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday.
During a recent briefing, Zelensky revealed that Putin is insisting on the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the remaining 30% of the Donetsk region, an area that has witnessed some of the fiercest fighting in the nearly four-year-long war. “We will not leave Donbas. We cannot do this,” Zelensky asserted, emphasizing that the territories in question are “illegally occupied” by Russian forces.
The Ukrainian president’s comments were made following a call with Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff, who conveyed Russia’s position after his meeting with Putin. Zelensky expressed concern that yielding to Russian demands would only serve as a “springboard for a future new offensive” by Moscow.
The stakes are high as Trump prepares for what has been described as a “listening exercise” with Putin, aimed at exploring potential pathways to peace. However, the absence of Zelensky from the summit has raised eyebrows, with many questioning the implications for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the decision not to invite Zelensky, stating that the meeting was initiated at Putin’s request. “This is for the president to get a more firm understanding of how we can hopefully bring this war to an end,” she said.
As the world watches closely, Zelensky has garnered support from European leaders, who are urging Trump to prioritize Ukraine’s interests in the discussions. “If Russia is not ready to stop the killings, then there must be sanctions on its economy that will force it to do so,” Zelensky warned, highlighting the urgent need for a unified response to Russian aggression.
With the summit just days away, the international community remains on edge, hoping for a breakthrough that could finally bring an end to the violence that has ravaged Ukraine for far too long.
