Washington, D.C. — The Smithsonian Institution has announced plans to update its exhibit on presidential impeachments following backlash over the removal of a display referencing former President Donald Trump’s impeachments. The decision has sparked debate about political influence in historical narratives.

Last month, the National Museum of American History removed a temporary placard detailing Trump’s impeachments, which critics argue distorted the historical record. The Smithsonian stated that the placard was taken down due to its failure to meet the museum’s standards for “appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation.” The institution emphasized that the removal was not influenced by any political pressure, asserting, “We were not asked by any Administration or other government officials to remove content from the exhibit.”

The controversy erupted after The Washington Post reported that the exhibit inaccurately claimed that “only three presidents have seriously faced removal,” omitting Trump’s two impeachments in 2019 and 2021. Critics, including Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, condemned the Smithsonian’s actions, framing them as a capitulation to political pressure. “You can run, but you cannot hide from the judgment of history,” Schumer stated, reinforcing that the American public will remember Trump’s impeachments.

The Smithsonian, which oversees 21 museums and the National Zoo, has committed to updating the impeachment section to accurately reflect all impeachment proceedings in U.S. history. This move comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny over the institution’s portrayal of historical events, particularly as Trump has sought to exert greater control over cultural and media institutions as part of his “Make America Great Again” agenda.

In March, Trump signed an executive order aimed at removing what he termed “improper ideology” from Smithsonian properties, threatening funding for exhibits that he believed “degrade shared American values” or “divide Americans based on race.”

Trump’s impeachments marked a significant chapter in American history, making him the only president to face this fate twice. He followed Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, who were also impeached, while Richard Nixon resigned before facing certain impeachment in 1974 amid the Watergate scandal.

As the Smithsonian prepares to revise its exhibit, the debate over historical representation and political influence continues to unfold, highlighting the ongoing struggle to balance historical accuracy with contemporary political pressures.
