Virginia AG Candidates Jay Jones and Jason Miyares Spar Over Violent Rhetoric in Heated Debate

Tensions Rise in Virginia Attorney General Debate: Miyares and Jones Clash Over Violent Rhetoric and Legal Accountability

Virginia Attorney General Candidates Clash in Heated Debate Amid Controversy

RICHMOND, Va. – In a fiery showdown on Thursday, Virginia Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares and his Democratic challenger Jay Jones faced off in their first and only debate, tackling a range of pressing legal issues. However, the discussion was largely overshadowed by the revelation of Jones’ controversial text messages advocating violence against a political opponent.

Miyares, the incumbent seeking reelection, seized the opportunity to criticize Jones for suggesting in a 2022 text that former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert should receive “two bullets to the head.” Opening the debate with a quote from President Abraham Lincoln, Miyares stated, “Character is what you do in the dark when no one is watching. But now we know what he (Jones) was doing in the dark.”

In response, Jones expressed regret for his past comments, stating, “Let me be very clear. I am ashamed, I am embarrassed, and I’m sorry.” However, he quickly pivoted, highlighting that inflammatory rhetoric is not exclusive to one party. “What about when Donald Trump used incendiary language to incite a riot to try to overturn an election?” Jones challenged Miyares, urging him to take accountability for the actions of his party.

The attorney general race has emerged as one of the most competitive contests in Virginia’s upcoming elections, drawing significant attention from both parties. With straight-ticket voting not an option in the state, candidates must earn votes individually across various statewide offices.

While Miyares has faced challenges in the governor’s race alongside other GOP candidates, the attorney general’s race remains fiercely contested. Recently, former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic nominee for governor, refrained from endorsing Jones during a debate, suggesting that the decision should rest with voters.

Throughout the debate, Miyares and Jones repeatedly clashed over the implications of the violent text message. Miyares argued that such comments disqualified Jones from serving as Virginia’s chief prosecutor. Conversely, Jones accused Miyares of lacking the courage to challenge the Trump administration when necessary, stating, “Jason hangs out with Donald Trump at MAGA rallies. I will see Jason Miyares and Donald Trump in court as your next attorney general.”

The candidates also discussed critical legal matters, including the enforcement of Virginia’s clean energy law and the scope of the state’s Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination. They exchanged barbs regarding their respective records on public safety, with Miyares questioning Jones’ experience after a report surfaced about Jones being clocked speeding at 116 miles per hour.

Jones defended his record in the Virginia House, emphasizing his support for legislation targeting sex offenders and human trafficking, as well as his experience combating ghost gun manufacturers while working in the District of Columbia’s attorney general’s office.

When asked by a moderator whether they viewed the attorney general’s office as a political or legal entity, Jones asserted, “It’s clearly a legal one, and that’s exactly why we have to hold the president accountable.” Miyares, however, sidestepped the question, insisting that the office’s primary role is to protect Virginians. “Jay Jones wants fights in Washington,” he said. “He’s running for the wrong office.”

As the debate concluded, it was clear that the race for Virginia’s attorney general is not just about legal expertise but also about character and accountability in a politically charged environment. With the election approaching, both candidates will need to navigate these contentious issues to secure voter support.
