Sweetspire Coffee and Bakery: A New Hub for Community in Williamsport

Williamsport, Pa. — A new coffee shop is set to brew more than just coffee; it aims to foster community connections in Williamsport’s Old City. Sweetspire Coffee and Bakery, located at 124 East Fourth Street, will open its doors to the public at 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, offering a cozy space for coffee lovers and community members alike.

Co-owner Caroline Payne, a political science professor at Lycoming College, envisions Sweetspire as a gathering place where locals can meet, collaborate, and form friendships. “We want to use this as a space where we can bring together the community,” she said. “I found it difficult to meet people when I moved here, and I want to change that for others.”

A Flavorful Experience

Sweetspire will serve freshly roasted coffee made on-site, alongside a selection of handmade pastries and grab-and-go lunch options. The café will feature a 3-kilo roaster, sourcing beans from Colombia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Ethiopia. Customers can look forward to a diverse menu that includes seasonal offerings, specialty lattes, macchiatos, and even frozen coffees.

Brittney Gross, the café’s director of coffee, brings her expertise from the Warrior Coffee Project, which connects students with coffee-growing regions. “We’re trying to roast our coffees from all around the world,” Gross explained, highlighting the café’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

Southern Charm Meets Local Flavor

The bakery will offer a unique twist with Southern-inspired pastries, including pimento cheese sandwiches and fresh biscuits, reflecting the owners’ Southern roots. “Food and company is what we want to provide,” said co-owner Nate Steele, who grew up in Texas. “Some of the recipes come from my family.”

Sweetspire will also cater to larger groups with pastry platters and to-go drink options, making it an ideal spot for meetings and gatherings.

A Calendar of Community Events

Beyond coffee and pastries, Sweetspire aims to be a vibrant community hub, hosting weekly events such as plant cutting exchanges, pottery classes, and art galleries. The café’s spacious layout includes comfortable seating for meetings and study groups, setting it apart from other local coffee shops.

In its inaugural week, Sweetspire will kick off with an artist gallery talk on Monday, October 20, followed by a Tasting Tuesday event and a Common Grounds discussion group. Other events include a plant cutting exchange and a “Lattes and Lectures” session featuring local experts.

Join the Sweetspire Community

Sweetspire Coffee and Bakery will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The café’s website and social media pages will provide a full calendar of events and additional information.

“Our vision creates a space of excellence and careful attention to detail in the coffee we source and roast, and the food we bake,” Steele said. With its commitment to community and quality, Sweetspire is poised to become a beloved gathering place in Williamsport.
