Weber State Football Faces Depth Challenges Ahead of Week 2 Matchup Against Arizona

Weber State Football Faces Challenges Ahead of Arizona Matchup

Harrisonburg, VA — After a tough 45-10 loss to James Madison in their season opener, Weber State football is gearing up for a critical Week 2 clash against Arizona. The Wildcats are looking to bounce back, but they’ll have to do so with a few adjustments to their roster.

In a disappointing turn of events, junior cornerback Tajon Evans suffered a knee injury during the game against the Dukes, leading to his long-term absence. Head coach Mickey Mental confirmed that Evans will not return this season, forcing sophomore Logan Mackey into the spotlight as the new backup to Montae Pate. The defensive backfield, already stretched thin, will rely heavily on Pate, Evans, Ishaan Daniels, and Tre Parks-Vinson, who all logged significant snaps last week.

Adding to the Wildcats’ woes, standout linebacker Sione Hala missed the opener due to an ankle injury. However, Mental is optimistic about Hala’s return for the upcoming game against Arizona. “All intentions are that Hala will be ready to play Saturday,” he stated, hoping to bolster a linebacker crew that is already missing Aidan O’Callaghan and Raimoana Tinirauarii for the nonconference schedule.

On the offensive front, sophomore offensive lineman Zoom Esplin is still working his way back from an injury sustained during camp. Trevor Beck will continue to start at right tackle, aiming to solidify the line against a formidable Arizona defense.

Turning the Page to Arizona

The Wildcats are eager to turn the page after their disappointing opener, but they face a tough challenge against Arizona, who dominated Hawaii in their first game with a 40-6 victory. Mental emphasized the need for a faster start this week, stating, “You can’t spot somebody 28 and then not move the ball offensively. It’s good to get that on film, good to coach off of and demand more of these guys.”

As the team prepares for the Big 12 opponent, Mental noted the intensity of Tuesday’s practice, saying, “I thought they practiced really well. It was physical. We got back to who we were a little bit.”

With the stakes high and a chance for redemption on the horizon, Weber State will look to harness their practice momentum and deliver a strong performance against Arizona this Saturday. Fans will be watching closely to see if the Wildcats can overcome their early-season hurdles and find their rhythm on the field.
